Support & Services for Private School Students in New York State

Transportation Services

Getting to School

In school districts outside of New York City, transportation must be provided for eligible private school students who meet distance criteria:

Eligibility:

  • Grades K–8: Students living more than 2 miles from their school of attendance are eligible.
  • Grades 9–12: Students living more than 3 miles from their school are eligible.
  • Transportation is required up to 15 miles measured along the nearest available public route between home and school.

Request Deadline:

  • Submit a written request to your public school district by April 11 annually
  • New Residents: May file late if moved into district after April 1 (within days used)
  • Contact your district early to confirm altsuves (typo: probably all issues) with your district early

Special Education Services

Getting to School

Private school students with disabilities can receive services from their public district.

Evaluation:

  • Request evaluation from your district’s Committee on Special Education (CSE)

Service Plan:

  • If eligible, Individualized Education Services (IEP/ProgP) is developed
  • Services like therapy, counseling, or academic support are provided

Parental Role:

  • Maintain open communication, laws, and regulations on students with disabilities
