OCTOBER '17 NEWSLETTER

Assalamualaikum, in this newsletter, you will receive a snapshot of everything we accomplished this past month in fifth grade. We have had a wonderful start to the year, Alhamdulilah.

In LITERACY & SOCIAL STUDIES -- In order to prepare for the state exam, we have been working out of a NYS testing readiness textbook. We dove deep into main idea/details and summarizing. Students have strengthened their writing and reading skills. Furthermore, every student moved up at least one reading level since the end of last school year! What an awesome accomplishment! In Social Studies, students studied current events articles from Newsela, as well as began learning about early American history.

In MATH -- As we approach our first math test, we wrapped up unit one. Students learned about place value, comparing decimals, and converting fractions and decimals.

In ISLAM -- At the start of school, we began a Hajj unit, which entailed several STEAM activities, to prepare for the Hajj Re-enactment. Fifth graders served as tour guides and taught the younger Hamza Academy students about the journey. We are now learning about what it means to be a Muslim.

In PBL -- We have started a PBL unit to solve a local issue in the community. With the hurricane season in full force, students have been studying the effects that natural disasters bring upon people and the communities they live in. We will be designing a water filter that can be used when people lose access to clean drinking water.

In SERVICE LEARNING -- Students collaborated with 4th grade to design an attainable community service project that we can carry out at school. They decided upon keeping the Masjid clean, planting flowers, putting recycling boxes in all classrooms, and picking up trash. There were so many great ideas, I got to see how kind their hearts truly are.

Parental Testimony

"ALL LEADERS ARE READERS" (Harry Truman).

"Literary is an imperative ingredient to one's success. This is why the commitment to reading by the teachers and kindergarten team must be acknowledged. The team's devotion to reading is undeniable and in my opinion a substantial foundation for development of our little jewels. In the 8 months that my son sat in kindergarten class he has grown from a love of listening to stories and word recognition to reading entire books to his family.

Thank you KG team, kudos on the dedication you have demonstrated in molding our little readers into great future leaders."
